Derrick Morgan

Derrick Morgan read music at Edinburgh University, winning the Ian Pitt Watson memorial prize for Choral Conducting. He has led Rudsambee since 2016, and is also Musical Director of the Troon Chorus, Blackbird Opera Company, Principal Conductor of Ensemble Alba, Conducting Fellow of the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and Guest Conductor of the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra.

His opera conducting debut was the Scottish Premiere of Jonathan Dove's Mansfield Park, with Edinburgh Studio Opera in partnership with Fife Youth Arts. From there he continued his relationship with ESO as their Assistant Musical Director and Fringe Festival Musical Director. He made his debut with Blackbird Opera in August 2019 in their Dumfriesshire tour of The Marriage of Figaro.

Derrick has led successful international and national tours with the orchestras and chorus of the Edinburgh University Music Society and the Edinburgh University String Orchestra (EUSO), and was guest conductor with EUSO in the 16/17 season. In 2017, he participated in the prestigious Orkney Conductors’ Course of the St Magnus International Festival. There he worked with Alexander Vedernikov, Charles Peebles and Sofi Jeannin. During the course he conducted the Norwegian Radio orchestra, the BBC Singers and the Assembly Project.

Derrick continues his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with the kind support of the RCS Trust.
