02/04/2025 | Sing with us at our Open Evening at Priestfield Parish Church, Marchhall Place, EH16 5HW | Not a concert, but an Open Evening on Wednesday 2nd April 2025. Please come along and hear what we sing, join in with the singing and if you like what we do, maybe you might like to become a member! You can contact Jane Watson on jpawatson@gmail.com or 07866 229809 for further information, but feel free to just turn up on the night. Rudsambee is an Edinburgh-based group dedicated to the joy of singing with friends. We have been meeting since 1993. The name comes from the Gaelic expression rud sam bith idir, meaning ‘anything at all’. We sing without accompaniment, in many styles from many eras and many countries – recent repertoire has included music from Hungary, Ireland, Estonia, America, Scotland, Armenia and Russia. We rehearse in Edinburgh on Wednesday evenings, and we’re currently looking for new singers to join us, especially sopranos and altos! Our latest concerts have been a Christmas concert at St Mark’s Unitarian Church, St Giles at Six and we travelled in the summer last year to Paisley Abbey and Bridge of Weir. | |
15/12/2024 | Edinburgh | St Giles’ Cathedral | Our finale for our singing year was at St Giles, one of our favourite venues with fabulous acoustics and magnificent stonework. We usually get a large audience there, and with 340 bookings as well as an uncertain number of people who turned up without booking, we probably far exceeded an audience of 400!
We performed a slightly shorter version of the St Mark’s programme from the previous night, 14th December, with the same electric finish, a rather breathtaking Jingle Bells!

14/12/2024 | Edinburgh | St Mark’s Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace | St Mark’s holds a special place in Rudsambee’s affections – both the wedding of a choir member and our first performance of Ieuan Wyn’s “Cariad”, sung in Welsh, (which won us a first prize at the Mayo International Choral Festival 10 years ago), took place here. This was our first Christmas Concert of 2024 and included a few old favourites such as Vaughan Williams Wassail song and some newer pieces including Herbert Howells “A Spotless Rose” and Bob Chilcott’s The Shepherds’ Carol. We finished with a very fast “Jingle Bells” – a modern arrangement of that familiar piece which dates way back to 1857! |
26/10/2024 | Paisley | Paisley Abbey | This was a rare visit to the West of Scotland for us – to the very historic and large Cathedral in the middle of busy Paisley. The programme was based mainly on our “Americas” repertoire but included a few extra favourites, including Bob Chilcott’s mesmerising take on The Silver Swan. |
26/10/2024 | Bridge of Weir | St Machar’s Ranfurly Church | Following on from our lunchtime concert in Paisley we moved even further west to Bridge of Weir and the lovely St Machar’s Church where our MD Ian is organist and choirmaster. In spite of the heavy rain the audience were in plenty and very appreciative. An hour of our “Americas” plus extras repertoire was well received and the refreshments afterwards were an added treat. A delightful church to perform in! |
08/09/2024 | Dunblane | Dunblane Cathedral | Our Christmas 2023 concert at St Giles was conducted by Kevin Duggan, Organist and Director of Music at the 12th century Dunblane Cathedral, and he was sufficiently pleased with our performance to invite us to sing at the Cathedral, which is jointly maintained by Historic Scotland and The Church of Scotland. We had a small audience but the ‘Americas’ concert program went down very well and we hope we might sing there again in the not too distant future. |
18/08/2024 | Edinburgh | St Giles’ Cathedral | In our first summer concert, we introduced a series covering the Americas with music from composers from Canada to Brazil. These included 2 pieces from Morten Lauridsen, an 80 year old NorthWest USA composer with exquisite melodies and lyrics, and a Brazilian tune, O Sapo, an eclectic story about a toad. Our usual Edinburgh walk-in tourist audience was mixed with many of our loyal followers. We do love singing in St Giles! |
28/04/2024 | Dunfermline | Dunfermline Abbey | We very much enjoyed our first visit to Dunfermline Abbey – a beautiful building, lovely acoustic and appreciative audience. There was consternation beforehand however when our one and only second tenor sent a message to say he’d had to take his son to A&E with a suspected broken arm and might not make it! Fortunately he arrived with 10 minutes to spare and, even more fortunately, it turned out his son’s arm wasn’t actually broken, in spite of the pain and swelling. |
20/04/2024 | Edinburgh | Church of the Sacred Heart, Tollcross | Our first concert of 2024 was also our first performance in the beautiful space and wonderful acoustic of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Lauriston Street. Our theme was Spring – Old and New with pieces spanning the centuries, including three different takes on the legend of the dying swan’s last and only song from Arcadelt, Gibbons and (personal favourite!) Bob Chilcott.

10/12/2023 | Edinburgh | St Giles’ Cathedral | Ian had a prior engagement but he arranged for Kevin Duggan, the Director of Music at Dunblane Cathedral, to take his place. There was a huge audience for another excellent concert – thank you Kevin! |
